Knowing Lilas, she would not have wanted our sadness to invade our every word or thoughts. On behalf of her children, her grandchildren, her brothers and sisters and all those who knew her, let’s work to embrace her journey as we remember her smile, the sound of her voice and her festive energy.
Born an artist, at a very young age, she took the reins of her life. We got to know a jovial, dynamic, warm, generous, helpful woman who loved to dance, make tchaka and soupe joumou and to bake cakes, pastries, and Haitian patties. Lilas was also known to be a person that put others first and rushed to help when needed.
While living in Haiti, Lilas made a career in the hotel industry in household arts, culinary arts, and event planning. She learned, educated and enjoyed the art world with her best friends and Hervé Mehu (deceased) and Tiga (deceased). She volunteered and provided education to children for many years with Father Arthur Volel in Cité Soleil and at the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince. She married Eddy Lucien, and adopted his daughter Natacha Lucien Paul, and they moved to the United States.
Her life in New York was a fruitful life with her family and friends until the loss of her son Gregory Lucien. This difficult experience helped her to quickly learn the meaning of the words courage, hard work, loyalty, solidarity and respect. Using these words as a foundation, she continued a model life dedicated to helping others through her career as a Home Health Aide. In addition, she served as a religious education teacher as part of the prayer group of Incarnation Church, Queens, NY. She had a great passion for every aspect of art and appreciated traveling and seeing the world. Her best vacation was a visit to see her brother Ernst in France. One of her favorite activities was to spend time and adore her son Alain Lucien while watching wrestling. Lilas loved and adored her son unconditionally, and often took him to church functions to show and present her handsome son. The epitome of a mother’s love.
She pampered her grandchildren as much as she could. Courageous and strong, Lilas has left her mark on the lives of many people who today mourn her departure and will continue to carry her in their hearts until the day when they can all come together for eternal life. Grandma Lilas we all thank you for what you have done for us, and say goodbye to you dear mom, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, with all the love we have for us. We assure you that your values will continue to exist through the generations.
