OBITUARY

Marieta Toussaint

May 21, 1918June 6, 2021

Marie Marietta Toussaint was born on May 21,1918 in Port Au Prince, Haiti to Farah Toussaint and Celica Louissaint. She was affectionately known as Maman, Grandma, Tata, Nennen, Mami, Matante TiTa, and Gigi. She was a classy woman who was always elegant in dress and in spirit. She was a seamstress by trade and she loved to cook and entertain. She had a youthful spirit that was accentuated by her sharp wit and her sense of humor. Marietta was always chocked full of stories and anecdotes to share with her close family and friends. She was the consummate hostess. Those who came to visit her could always expect a meal, a beverage or a gift, as she was the type to always give her last. Duty, decency, reliability, honor, dignity, and respect: these are all qualities that she not only held in high esteem but also practiced during her time on this earth. She could be serious, and she was disciplined, but she never resisted the opportunity to socialize with friends and loved ones at any given chance. Marietta had a personable demeanor and she was the type of person who was always willing to assist anyone who was in need. She was always willing to make other’s problems her own. She was a humble woman with a massive heart and a very strong spirit. It seems like her main concern was always whether her loved ones had enough to eat. While in her 20s, she met the love of her life, Roger Riviere and bore him a son, Emmanuel. She was a strict but extremely loving mother who spoiled her only child immensely. As a teenager, her son left Haiti to find a better life in the United States and took residence in Brooklyn, NY. In 1969, she followed him in order to help him raise his family. Upon arriving in New York, She was able to gain employment with a coat factory in Bushwick, Brooklyn as a seamstress, where she worked diligently until her retirement in 1990. In 1974, she and her son purchased a home in Springfield Gardens, NY. It was in this home that she would continue to help raise her family. She was always surrounded by loved ones but her priority was always her family and her faith. She is survived by her daughter in law, Iderle, her 5 grand-children; Mario, Naj-Lah, Soraya (husband Demetrius), Emmanuel and Teresah and her 4 great-grandchildren: Jayden, Nah-Lah Marie, Michelle Aurora and Gavin. Her nieces and nephews, Alourdes, Annette, Pierrot, Reynold and the Nelson Family. Also survived by countless cousins, grand nieces, grand nephews and friends. She will always be remembered as the ultimate mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Her legacy and spirit will continue to live on in the many ways she touched those that entered her life. Many would think that heaven has gained an angel but she was and will always remain an angel to her family.
