Martin F. Abrams, age 80, of Queens Village, New York passed away on Sunday October 6, 2019. Martin Fitzgerald Abrams was born November 2, 1938 in Georgetown, Guyana, South America. He was the first child of Ivy Joseph and Ronald Abrams. Martin received his formal education from elementary school up to Chatham High School.

Martin was a sport enthusiast with an affinity for fierce competition. He focused his passion and talents on cycling. He was a member of various cycling clubs and represented his beloved Guyana in several international cycling meets.

He was affectionately called “AB”, a moniker that represented his socialite persona, which he exhibited throughout his life. He established many long-standing friendships from childhood play with neighboring children and his time spent in the St. Georges Anglican Church choir.

In the early 1960’s Martin suffered a cycling career ending injury, and migrated to London, England to join his father and other family members. With aspirations to become a Dentist, he left England and set his sights on the United States of America. He briefly attended the University of Southern Illinois and eventually matriculated to Long Island University Brooklyn, NY.

As he made New York City is home, or as he would say is “Kingdom”, he met Ioni Samuels and the two married on January 27, 1973. Out of this union two wonderful children were conceived: Wayne and Morton.

He advanced his career to include positions at Con Edison, followed by a stint on Wall Street (at Manufacturers Handover Trust, Merrill Lynch, and Oppenheimer) before settling on a career as a Dental Technician.

His love of sports evolved into his love of baseball when he came to the U.S. He was quite fond of the 70’s N.Y. Yankees and the 80’s N.Y. Mets. His favorite pastime was reading and listening (also singing along) to what he would call the “Oldies”. He was a member of the Alpha Omega United Order of Scottish Mechanics Lodge no.44. and the Swansea Group.

Martin became ill in 2009, as his health and memory decreased, his health continued to fail throughout the next several years. He was then admitted to Holliswood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in February 2014 until he was called home to be with the Lord on Oct 7, 2019.

Martin was loved and respected by many. He walked with his head held high, entered rooms with grace and instantly let his presences be felt as if he was royalty. Duty, decency, reliability, honor, dignity, and respect: these are all qualities that he not only held in high esteem but also practiced during his time on this earth. He could be serious, and he was disciplined, but he never resisted the opportunity to socialize with friends and loved ones at any given chance. As a true definition of a proud black man, he saw a lot during his lifetime, which understandably influenced his views on the world. Yet, he remained steadfast while never forgetting his humble roots. He made sure to instill his knowledge and pass on life lessons to his sons.

He leaves behind many who will forever cherish is memory: Wife-Ioni; Children-Wayne and Morton; Daughter-in-law-April; Grandchildren-Travis, Lauren, and Adonis; Brother- Stanislaus; Sister-in-law-Joanne, Marie, and Elga; Brother-in-law-Orrett, cousins and many other, nephews, nieces and friends.
