June 8, 1960 – January 12, 2021
Who was Rene Jean-Philippe? On the morning of June 8th, 1960, at dawn, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti a baby boy was brought into this world. He was the pride and joy of Justin and Ozianna Jean-Philippe. Rene began his life adventure in Port-au-Prince Haiti, where he attended primary school until his parents and siblings migrated to the United Stated in 1972. Rene, his parents and siblings settled in Queens Village, New York where he lived until he departed from this world. He attended Junior High school and Andrew Jackson High School until his graduation in 1978.
Upon graduation from High School, Rene attended Queensborough Community College where he pursued a career as an Applied Scientist, until his last semester, when he left to begin his lifelong career in Sales. When asked why he did not complete his Associate degree, his answer was pure and simple, “I love the camaraderie of working and helping people, besides, I get to make money while I am at it”. Rene was passionate about business; he was a consummate professional. On many occasions he worked six to seven days a week, sometimes ten hours a day, no complaint to achieve the American dream. It is that passion and desire to thrive at everything that led him to open his own electronic business after working at various electronic stores on Jamaica Avenue, Queens for more than 20 years. When he finally opened his own store, he aptly named it “JUSTOZ” in memory of his father Justin and his mother Ozianna. He was dedicated to his business, so much that despite his illness, he worked at the helm up until the last six months before he departed on January 12, 2021.
His other passion was cooking. Rene was a chef par excellence. His culinary skills spoke volume to all who were fortunate enough to enjoy his culinary delights. As anyone can tell he also enjoyed his own cooking too. A man with a great personality and character, a bon vivant with an unmistakably booming voice, considering his height. His presence always brought joy to every life he touched, family and friends alike. Although he had no children of his own, he was a generous mentor to his nieces and nephews, respected by his peers and very much loved by his parents and siblings. Rene married his sweetheart nee Alathia Sylvester on October 16th, 2004 and have remained inseparable until the very end.
His easy-going relaxed nature made him a delight to be around. He was an avid football fan and believe it or not, he loved Spiderman, his favorite superhero. Those fond memories and personal attributes made Rene Jean-Philippe such a wonderful person to be around. Rene Jean-Philippe touched many lives and will continue to do so long after his transition. He had big dreams and accomplished so much. It is unfortunate that his life ended so short. Rene is survived by his widow Alathia Jean-Philippe, his brothers Evans, Jean-Marie, Jean-Claude and sister Yolette Dolcy. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces, Jessica, Alan, Adam, Derek, Becky Naomi, Belinda and Michael, his cousins Bradley, Jeanine (Fifi), Nerva, Jean-Emile, Marie-Clarisse, Harry, Nadia, Joel, Paul Andre, Yves and Barbara and Linda, his best friend Rodney Barnes, Goddaughter Kiera, Sisters-in-Law Cheryl and Cederna. Even though he left us too soon, his memory will continue to live on in our hearts and minds, his spirit and legacy will endure.
