Robert Joseph Satchwell, Jr. was born on October 23, 1932 to Robert and Agnes Satchwell in Pondside in the parish of St. Elizabeth Jamaica, West Indies. He was the fourth born and first son of six sisters and two brothers. He was affectionately referred to as “son” by his parents, “brother son” by his siblings or “uncle son” by his many nieces and nephews. As a child, Robert enjoyed swimming all day in the great pond on the family property with his siblings and friends. As part of his daily chores, he would tend to the cows and horses on the family farm.
Robert graduated from Pondside Primary School and shortly thereafter migrated from Jamaica, West Indies to London, England in the early 1950s where he resided in West London. His daughter Kimberly was born in London in 1962.
He worked at PB Cow Limited from 1955 – 1969 as a moulder. In 1969, Robert migrated to Rochester, NY. He worked at Bausch and Lomb one of the world's largest eye care product companies, in Rochester, NY from 1969 until he moved to Queens, NY. His next job was at Agate Lacquer Manufacturing Company in Long Island City, NY where he rose to the position of production supervisor and worked there until he retired in 2000 at the age of 68.
Robert met the love of his life Phyllis Gayle in 1977 through one of his co-workers who was a close family friend to Phyllis. They married on August 30, 1980 and later welcomed their daughter, Camille who was born on March 24, 1981.
As a young man Robert played cricket in Jamaica and England. He was an avid sports fan whose favorite teams were Chelsea Football Club in England, the New York Giants football team, the New York Yankees baseball team and NY Islanders hockey team. After his retirement, he remained active in sports by joining two bowling leagues which he greatly enjoyed. He also loved to walk no matter the season. Robert read the newspaper daily and he loved to debate topics of local and international interest. In his later years, he attended the Jamaica Service Program for Older Adults (JSPOA) six days a week which was like a second home to him.
Robert is survived by his wife Phyllis, daughters Kim and Camille, one granddaughter, four grandsons, five great grandchildren, three sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by friends, godchildren and caregivers.
