Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Walter grew up in Brooklyn, NY with his siblings Irene, Monica, Norah and Francis. He attended St. Brendan’s School, Cathedral Prep HS, and then Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
Post-graduation, Walter moved back to the Big Apple where he held many odd jobs including constructing Roosevelt Field Mall, owning a restaurant in Manhattan called The Inn Between and finally settling into a position with the New York Racing Association until retirement.
In 1966, Walter found the love of his life at an NYU Catholic Center square dance. Walter and Diane were married on June 3rd, 1967. They moved to Laurelton in 1969 and became the happy parents of Sylvia, Gregory, Marie, Matthew and John Henry and grandparents of Christian, Michelle, Thomas, Andrew, Patrick, Matthew and Jackson.
Anyone who knew Walter was sure to have a smile come to their face at the mention of his “Uncle Stash”. Quick with a joke or 5, Walter was definitely a very memorable character. He was a faithful servant of the Lord, an active worshiper at St. Mary Magdalene and Holy Name of Mary parishes and a loyal member of the St. Francis Prep Fathers’ Guild. He especially believed in “table ministry”, never turning down a meal or a good game of Cribbage.
Walter will surely be missed by his family and many friends, but will live on through their memories of a man who certainly was “larger than life.”
