Lai King was born on the 21st of December 1928 in Sun Hing County (新興縣) in Guangdong (廣東省), China to her loving parents Mr. Chung Pak So (蘇松柏) and Mrs. Sun Mui Lai (黎新妹). She grew up in Sun Hing City (新興街), and although she did not attend any school due to the Second World War, she learned on her own to write her name and some simple words when growing up. As a child, she enjoyed taking care of the fish in her family’s fish farms, which placed her family in the middle class at that time.
At age 19, Lai King married Mr. Shu Ng (伍樹)of Yuetang Village (悦塘村), our late beloved father. Through thick and thin, including a World War and a few years living apart, they shared 64 years of loving marriage and raised six children. They established the well-known Cheung Kee (祥記) food store in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, which was in continuous operation and loved by the local community for over 50 years. Lai King took care of her husband, children and grandchildren with love and patience while managing the successful food store business. She also supported our relatives in China throughout the most difficult post-war period, despite the difficult financial situation our family faced in Hong Kong. After immigrating with her husband to Quincy, MA, U.S.A. in 1991, she dedicated her time to taking care of her grandchildren and volunteering, for example by teaching Chinese health exercise to seniors, especially after her husband passed away.
Lai King is survived by her brother King Sun So (蘇敬新) and six children: Tsui Hung, Tung Shan (Kenneth), Tsui Ha, Wah Shan, Tsui Wan, and Yin Shan. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, and was known for her devotion to family. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Shu Ng, and her brothers Yiu Kwan So (蘇耀坤), Chap Sun So (蘇集新) and Ching Sun So (蘇正新).
