The oldest daughter of four children, Lan Fong Kwan was born in Hoiping, Guangdong, China, on October 13, 1925. She married Chi Kiu Chow in 1944, and they had eight children together. In 1953, the family moved to Hong Kong.
After her husband suffered a fatal asthma attack at age 51, Lan Fong moved with her three youngest children to the Allston neighborhood of Boston, where her eldest daughter and her husband were raising five daughters. While in Boston, Lan Fong reveled in being a grandmother and also worked as a seamstress in Chinatown.
In 1988, Lan Fong moved to Randolph with her four youngest sons and daughters. There, she took pride in growing flowers and vegetables for the family. In addition to having a green thumb, she was an excellent cook. Her grandchildren have many fond memories of the delicious meals she lovingly prepared for them. One never went hungry in the Chow home!
