Peggy Cates Carleton

Peggy Cates Carleton– in her 89th year, longtime resident of Quincy passed away peacefully on August 14, 2015. She was the beloved wife of the late Harry V. Carleton, who predeceased her in 2001. Devoted mother of Nancy Duane & her husband Jack of North Hampton, NH and Bonnie Marcel & her husband Michael of Quincy. Cherished “Nai-nai “ of Christina Duane of Hampton, NH, Juliana Jones & her husband Andre of Sanford, ME and Harry Marcel of Quincy. Proud great grandmother of Emmitt, Brigitte and Holden Jones. Loving sister of the late David Cates and Howard Cates.

Peggy was a graduate of the Gould Academy in Bethel, ME and later earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maine. She was a Past President of the Squantum School PTA. Always an active and valued member of her congregation, Peggy served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent at the First Church of Squantum in Quincy. She was an avid skier, skater and sports enthusiast who loved to watch tennis, baseball and hockey. She was a dedicated crew for her husband Harry Carleton, and together the won numerous Hustler Class National Championships and other sailing regattas.

A visitation will take place on Wed. August 19, 2015 from 10 – 11 AM at the Deware Funeral Home, 576 Hancock Street, QUINCY followed by a funeral service at the First Church of Squantum, 164 Bellevue Road, Quincy at 11:30 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

She will be laid to rest at a private burial beside her late husband at the Friends Cemetery in Vassalboro, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory made to the First Church of Squantum would be appreciated.
