

Rev. David B. McGugan of 506 N. Vance Street, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham at the age of 72 Rev. McGugan was born in Hoke County on April 30, 1938 to the late Mary Gladys Gibson and Locke Archie McGugan. He graduated from Red Springs High School, then earned an AA degree from Campbell College, a BA in sociology from Pfeiffer College, and a divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. An ordained Southern Baptist minister, he served the following churches: Godwin Baptist; First Baptist, Hope Mills; Myrtle Grove, Wilmington; Pleasant Hope, Fairmont; Great Marsh, St. Pauls; Back Swamp, near Lumberton; Orrum Baptist; and currently McDonald Baptist Church where he has served since 1997. In addition to his work as pastor, Rev. McGugan had an extensive background in counseling and chaplaincy work, having served internships at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem in 1964 and 1977; a one-year internship in clinical pastoral education at the Baptist Medical Center in Columbia, SC. He earned his NC Funerals Directors license in 1971. From 1980 until 1984 he served as chaplain for the Robeson County Sheriffs Dept. And from 1988 until 1994 he was Chaplain and Bereavement Care Coordinator with Hospice of Robeson. Rev. McGugan began his funeral service career in 1954, working for Waverly Barham in Red Springs, Honeycutt in China Grove, Powles in Rockwell, Dunahoes Funeral Service, Crumpler Funeral Home, and Boles Funeral Home all in Red Springs. Survivors include his wife: Carolyn Fisher McGugan of Red Springs; a daughter: Deborah McGugan Kinsman and husband Doug of Whispering Pines; two brothers: James Harry McGugan and wife Zelma of Red Springs and Clyde Gibson McGugan and wife Nina Margaret of Red Springs; two sisters: Martha Ann McGugan Elliott and her companion Charlie Ripple of Ocean Isle and Betty Sue McGugan Wood and husband Wilton of Aberdeen; two grandchildren: Ashley Nicole Kinsman and Laura Elizabeth Kinsman, and beloved dog, Angel. Visitation will be from 7:00 until 9:00 pm on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 220 East 4th Avenue, Red Springs, NC 28377. Funeral Services will be 3:00 pm, Sunday, June 20, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Red Springs with Reverend Bradley Boberg and Reverend Hedrick Jones officiating. Burial will be in Alloway Cemetery.
