Mary "Deanie" Southern

Mrs. Mary Geraldine Chappell ""Deanie"" Southern of Raeford passed away on Monday, January 13, 2020 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst at the age of 85.Mrs. Southern was born in Hoke County on March 13, 1934 to the late John Thomas Chappell and Sarah Novella Lancaster ""Nonie"" Chappell. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Billy Gray Southern. She was a member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years where she was active with the Presbyterian Women and the Joy Group. She retired at the age of 72 as the office manager of Liberty Home Care and Hospice in Raeford. She loved going out for dinner with her friends. Her hobbies were, quilting and crocheting, sharing her creations as gifts to family and friends. She was a beautiful gift to the world.She is survived by her son, Lester Gray Southern (Jennifer Austin a special daughter), of Raeford, NC; her daughter, Yvonne Baker Harrell and husband Robert of Southern Pines, NC; grandchildren, Mandy Luck (Jonathan) and Lesley Craven (Josh) and great grandchildren, Cullen Craven and Landry Craven.A committal service will be held 4:00 pm Friday, January 17, 2020 at the Raeford Cemetery. A Visitation will be held from 12:30 until 2:00 on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall in the Raeford Presbyterian Church.A memorial service be held 2:00 pm Saturday in the Raeford Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. Steven Fitzgerald officiating.Memorials may be made to The Bill and Mary Southern Scholarship, c/o Raeford Presbyterian Church P.O Box 1570 Raeford, NC 28376.
