Alfred Scales (Sandy) Linthicum III died on October 5, 2026, after a long battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). He was born on August 31, 1948, in Raleigh, where he grew up and graduated in one of the first classes from Enloe High School. He attended NCSU and transferred from math into the newly formed major of computer science, which allowed him to graduate in one of their first computer science classes in 1970. After moving to Greensboro in 1973, he started his own business with a colleague selling computers and software. In the 1980’s he and a partner sold computer systems to small medical practices. He returned to Raleigh in 1988 for his business where he continued his IT career. In 2001 he went to work at the NC Department of Health and later transferred to the Water Quality Division from which he retired as their Chief Information Officer.
Sandy was always interested in music. He played guitar and would tell you that Jimi Hendrix was his favorite musician. He also liked fast cars and owned several cars which he took to the VIR and other racetracks so he could participate in high-speed driving courses with the local BMW and Porsche clubs.
Sandy is survived by his wife, Kathy, and a brother, Bill Linthicum. In addition, he has a son, Mark, who is married to Erin Saleeby and has 2 sons, Finn and Nate. He also has a daughter, Emily Linthicum, who is married to Bryan Chamberlin and has a daughter named Violet. Both children live in Southern California.
A funeral service will be held at 2pm on October 17, 2026, at the Church of the Nativity (8849 Ray Rd, Raleigh, NC-27613).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to support MSA research.
