Alfred graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Chemistry. He worked with Chemstrand in Pensacola, FL until joining his brothers in operating the family business, Matthews Machine Co. in Decatur, AL. He relocated to Raleigh, NC several years ago.
He is survived by his three children: Michelle Matthews, of Decatur, AL, David C. Matthews and wife Marcia, of Toney, AL, Nancy Higdon and husband Terry, of Decatur, AL; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, James and Roni Matthews, Ernest and Annie Ruth Matthews and Ralph and Anne Matthews, all of Decatur, AL.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, December 17, 2011 from 12 – 1 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home, with funeral services to begin at 1 PM. Interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
