Ann was born in Lincolnton NC to Lee and Jeanette Coggins. Ann moved to Baltimore during World War II in support of the war effort where she worked as a welder in the shipyards building Liberty Ships.
Ann met and married Bradley Westerdahl, a US Marine, in June 1947 in Baltimore, MD. She raised three daughters, alone at times, during her husband’s 30 year career in the Marine Corps and did a great job. The family moved to Charlottesville, VA in 1970 where Ann received statewide honors for her work with the area’s local food bank. In 1997 Ann and her husband relocated to Raleigh, NC.
Ann was feisty, full of energy, loving, and generous to a fault. She was a fighter and occasionally a bit of a hell raiser. She enjoyed the glitz and glitter of Las Vegas.
God may have reclaimed one of His angels, but our memories of her will last forever. She can rest now with the knowledge of how deeply she was loved. She will be greatly missed by all who cherished her.
She leaves behind her loving husband of 68 years, Bradley Westerdahl; daughters, Susan Gordon (Greg) of Earlysville, VA, Jeanette Chorpenning (Brent) of Raleigh, Lee Acosta (Joe Mazzaglia) of Garner; grandchildren, Brad Olson (Rachel), Allicia Giuseppe (Adam Meuse), Blakley Chorpenning (Sean Edgecombe), Brook del Valle (Brian); great-grandchildren, Zora, Ellys, Naomi, Devin, McKenzie, and Jaxon. She is also survived by sister, Francis Langdale of Moorehaven, Florida, and numerous loving family members and friends. Predeceased are brothers, Jack, Curlee and Charlie Coggins. Ann held a special place in her heart for each and every member of her family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 2:00pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh with visitation prior to the service, from 1:00pm – 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Cir, Raleigh, NC 27607.
