Anne Marie Hinders Fortier, 45, of Raleigh, NC went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 9th after a courageous 3 and a half-year battle with ALS. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. Anne was born to the late Justin and Bette Hinders on August 16, 1968 in Washington, DC.
She graduated from James Madison University in 1990. She worked as a software consultant and technical writer for several IT companies. She met her husband, Matt, at Grotto Pizza in Rehoboth, DE in 1990, where they both held summer jobs. They married on June 18, 1994 in Arlington, VA and subsequently moved to North Carolina, where they stayed ever since to raise their family. Her happiest days were spent raising her three precious daughters, who, together with Matt, she called “Team Fortier”. Anne was a wonderful example of a Christian wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was an active member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church for more than 10 years. She volunteered countless hours at VBS and taught Sunday School. After her children started school, she taught for many years at HBUMC Preschool, where “Ms. Anne” got her daily supply of hugs and kisses. Anne was a familiar face at her daughters’ schools, volunteering in nearly every capacity. She never met a stranger and was a loyal friend to all who knew her. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved a good laugh. Anne had a welcoming, open-door policy and found great joy in hosting friends, family, and children in her home. She loved taking family vacations, especially to Oak Island at Spring Break, and to Corolla with the extended Hinders family.
Anne is survived by her beloved husband of 20 years, Matt Fortier; three daughters: Elizabeth Anne, Katherine Smith, and Genevieve Wade of the home; seven siblings and their families; and in-laws Bob and Katie Fortier and family in Delaware. The family would especially like to thank Anne’s sister Maripat, Sarah Kadate, Sue, Dwan and Aimee from Transitions Care and the many nurses from PHI as well as the “girlfriends” (you know who you are!) for their compassionate care and love. In addition, a heartfelt thanks from her family goes to Dr. Richard Bedlack and staff at the Duke ALS clinic and the wonderful support of all of her church family at Hayes Barton Methodist.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Growing in Love fund at HBUMC, 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, NC 27608.
A visitation will be held on Friday July 11th from 7pm – 9pm at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held Saturday July 12th at 11 am also at Hayes Barton Methodist Church.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh. Condolences may be made through brownwynne.com.
