Arthur "Art" Henry Allen III

Arthur Henry Allen III, 78, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026, following an extended illness with Parkinson’s disease and a brief battle with cancer. He is now at peace in the presence and glory of our loving God and Father.

Born on May 12, 1948, in Paterson, New Jersey, Art was the beloved third of five children born to Arthur Henry Allen Jr and Freda Hobler Allen.

Art grew up in North Haledon, New Jersey, where he attended Manchester High School, graduating with the Class of 1966 and lettering in football and wrestling. He spent many treasured summers at the family lake house on Pinecliff Lake in West Milford, New Jersey. It was during high school that he met Judith Eichmann, the love of his life. They were married on November 23, 1967, and from that day forward were lovingly known as “Art and Judy.”

Art attended the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, graduating with the Class of 1970. Early in his career, he devoted much of his time to the family’s textile mill in Paterson, New Jersey, where he developed a remarkable breadth of knowledge in chemistry, mechanics, and electrical processes. Resourceful, creative, and generous with his expertise, Art was the person others turned to when something needed to be understood, repaired, or improved—a true “go-to guy.”

He continued to build a respected career with firms including Inmont, BASF, and Sensient. His work took him around the world and also led him to share his knowledge as a guest lecturer at North Carolina State University’s Wilson College of Textiles.

Throughout the years, Art and Judy enjoyed traveling together, especially to Germany and throughout the United States, often accompanied by their dear travel companions, Edith Eichmann and Ross and Jane Spalt.

Art had a gift for captivating a room with one of his stories—even if those gathered had heard it half a dozen times before. A true lover of nature, he carried through life a deep sense of curiosity and discovery, finding joy in fishing, hiking, and backyard birding. Later in life he found solace in pottery. Creating wonderful pieces in his potter’s shed. gifting many of his works of art to friends and family.

Above all, his greatest treasure and life purpose was his family. A person that made a point to there during a time of need or just to be present. He cherished the many memories, especially the meaningful times spent at Ocean Isle Beach.

The family is deeply grateful for the care, compassion, and support they and Art received throughout this part of his journey, including from his caregiver, Kevin Shelton; the entire team at The Key Home Care; Heartland Hospice and its nurses, Chioma and Tania; and White Memorial Presbyterian Church, including Tom Harris and Martha Grove Hipskind.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lynn Schmidt.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Judith Eichmann Allen; their sons, Robert Allen (Jennifer) and Douglas Allen (Rebecca); his grandchildren, Autumn, Jordon, and Emma; his siblings, Jane Spalt (Ross), Chip Allen (Irene), and Susan Hollinger (Frank); and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration of life will be held at Hayes Barton Place, 2600 Yettington Drive, Raleigh, NC, on Saturday, August 29th at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, SPCA of Wake County, and White Memorial Presbyterian Church.
