March 28, 1923 – August 2, 2011
Audrey Robinson Allred passed away, Tuesday, August 2nd in Wilmington. She was born in Huddersfield, England on March 28, 1923, the daughter of Helen and Archibald Robinson. She joined the British Army shortly after her high school graduation, and played an important part in the war effort as a member of the team that intercepted telegraph messages and broke the German code throughout World War II. It was during this time that she met her husband, Staff Sergeant Fred Allred, an American officer from North Carolina
After the War, Audrey and Fred moved to Raleigh, where they both had successful careers and raised two children, Elizabeth and Stephen. Audrey pursued her deferred dream of college, graduating summa cum laud from Meredith College and earning a masters’ degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Audrey began her professional career as a teacher in the Raleigh Public Schools, and quickly rose to the position of principal, including serving as Principal of Wiley Elementary School for many years. In 1970, she accepted a faculty position in Meredith College's Education Department, and happily taught hundreds of young women there until her retirement in 1985. She continued her love of teaching by serving as a docent for the North Carolina Museum of Art for many years. Her husband Fred passed away on March 25, 1984.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Creech and a son in law, Larry Creech, of Southport; her son, Stephen and a daughter in law, Julia, of Richmond, Virginia; four grandchildren: Richard Creech of Arlington, Virginia; Charlotte Creech Fagelman of Stony Point, New York; James Allred of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Meredith Allred of Mt. Airy, North Carolina; three great grandchildren: Daniel, Thomas and Cara Fagelman; nephew Robert Andrew Maitland of Greenwich, England; niece Judy Buckingham of Chipping Norton, England; and niece Gina Hobson of Hastings, England.
A memorial service and interment will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6th. Following the service the family will receive friends in Shepherd’s Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Alzheimer's Foundation, the Church of the Good Shepherd, or a charity of your choice.
