

Barbara graduated from Lowell State Teachers College and worked as a teacher in Springfield, MA, Midland, MI, and for 16 years in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system.
She was married to Gordon Axon until his death in 2003.
Barbara is survived by sisters Frances Szmit and Margaret Farrell; her son Allan Geoffrey Axon and wife Amelia Axon, grandson Wesley Joseph Fulvio Axon; son John Lawrence Axon and wife Tory Fair, grandson Ellis Fair Axon; and son Daniel Peter Axon.
After raising her family in Charlotte, Barbara and Gordon lived in Oak Island, NC where mom was active in the art community and worked in water colors and collages. While in Charlotte and Oak Island, Gordon and Barbara traveled to Great Britain, Germany, Japan, the Scandinavian countries. They also hosted visitors from Krefeld, Germany including a couple during the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in Raleigh. She moved to Raleigh, NC in 2007 to be close to family.
Family and friends remember that in their time in Charlotte, Barbara's home was always the center of activity to her son's neighborhood and school friends, many of their teammates.
A memorial service will be held Friday, August 13, 2010 at 3:00 pm in the Wynne Center at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Barbara's name should be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation at http://www.bcrfcure.org/.
