Barbara Allen Slifer, age 72, retired Public Affairs Officer for the US Army, having served in several posts including Fort Bliss, TX, Fort Huachuca, AZ and longest at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Forces Europe (SHAFE) in Heidelberg, Germany, passed away on Monday, December 6, 2021, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Barbara was the youngest child and only daughter of Lawrence Minton Slifer and Ethel Ferrell Slifer. Her father was an officer in the United States Navy so the family moved fairly often in her early years to include New Orleans, LA and Pascagoula, MS (x2) each move to the Gulf coast was followed by going back to the Tidewater area of Virginia. She graduated from Warwick High School in Newport News, VA in 1967 and earned a BA degree from Christopher Newport College of the College of William & Mary in 1972.

She is survived by her two brothers and their families: Joseph Francis “Joe” Slifer, II and wife Geanie, of Raleigh, NC and William Lawrence “Bill” Slifer and wife Peggy, of Newport News, VA; nephews and niece: Joseph Francis "Frank" Slifer, III and wife Anna of Knightdale, NC; Thomas Lawrence "Tom" Slifer and wife Sue of Lincoln, CA; and Morgan Slifer Blue and husband Kenny Blue of Raleigh, NC. She was also blessed with dear friends and former colleagues: Barbara O’Neal, Linda Power, and Helen Hoffman.

Private Services are being arranged by her family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in to the Alzheimer’s Association.
