Bernard Lieberman, a truly gentle man, was born on November 7, 1923 in Waterbury, Connecticut where he grew up enjoying music, photography and ice skating. His studies at Dartmouth College were interrupted by his service to his country during World War II, following which he returned to finish his undergraduate degree and marry his beloved Ruth (who preceded him in death in 2005). Bernie continued on to earn a MBA at Temple University and settled in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. His son Lenny, daughters Laurie and Sue, grandchildren Rachel, Christopher, Marissa and Sierra and great-grandson Connor survive him.
He leaves us with his collection of photographs that portray how much he treasured the life that he and Ruth built as their family and circle of close friends grew. His pictures document countless camping trips, hikes and travel through the United States, Canada and Europe as well as four visits to Israel. Along with photography, one of his ultimate pleasures was packing up the car and driving to exciting places near and far. On a lighter note, Bernie always enjoyed his desserts, especially chocolate ones, at home or discovered while on an adventure.
During his son Lenny’s Boy Scout years, Bernie’s participation in the program reflected his love of being an involved parent and mirrored his own beliefs that coincided so strongly with the basic values of Boy Scouting.
We have also had the pleasure of sharing his love of music, which covered a broad range from classical to musicals. There is no doubt that what got Bernie up and dancing was Swing, especially Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. He became well known at Springmoor, where he and Ruth became residents in 2001, for his ability to dance and get the party jumping.
Judaism had a strong influence on Bernie as a child and he continued studying and learning about his faith as he became an adult. All of us who have been touched by his qualities of integrity and unfailing efforts to always do his best will be better people for it.
After living a full life, Bernie will live on in each one of us and the memories of him that we hold in our hearts. His children and grandchildren would like to say a word of thanks to the many people at Springmoor who have been there for him and for us when needed. There are too many to name. You know who you are and we thank you.
A memorial Service will be held September 23, 2018 at 2 pm at Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Rd, Raleigh, NC.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh.
