Betsy Jane Senter Wooden

Betsy Jane Senter Wooden passed away on the morning of November 22, 2013 at the age of 99. She was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on July 2, 1914. She was the oldest of four children born to Fred and Bessie Senter. She graduated from Hugh Morson High School and attended Meredith College. She worked at the Agronomy Department of N.C. State College, the State Department of Agriculture, the N.C. State legislature, and for 32 years was the secretary of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church. She was extremely active with volunteer work in her retirement. For 19 years, she volunteered weekly at Rex Hospital, and served as docent at the NC Museum of Art for a decade. She was friendly to all with a happy, enthusiastic, and inclusive outlook on life. She loved her family, Pullen Church, her friends, the beach, card games, Duplin County wine, and chocolate candy. She was loved by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. Warren Walter Wooden, buried in Normandy, France; her son, Dr. Warren Walter Wooden Jr.; her sisters Rachel Ross and Mary Ellen Whitt, and her brother Fred Senter. She is survived by her daughter Jane Wooden McCommons of Falls Church, Virginia, 6 grandchildren: Chris Wooden Hand, Kristin McCommons Jones, Priscilla Wooden, Caroline Wooden, Ian McCommons and Caitlin McCommons; and 10 great grandchildren: Olivia Kim, Graeme, William, and Owen Jones, Fern Wooden, Margaret Huckabee, Trinity Purvis-Wooden, Jay, and Betsy Kate Purvis, and Alasdair McCommons.

She will be buried in her family plot in Oakwood Cemetery. The graveside service will be at 3:00PM Saturday, November 30. The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh from 2:00PM until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Music Ministry of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough St. Raleigh, NC 27587.
