Boyd Bruner “BB” Comer, 89, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dear friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, July 28, 2026. Boyd, an only child, was born on November 24, 1936 in Marion, VA to the late Rush and Virginia Comer.
He is survived by his sons, Ken (Suzanne) of Huntsville, AL; Brad (Natalie) of Wendell, NC; Mark (Melinda) of Raleigh, NC; Chris of Durham, NC; nineteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rush and Virginia Comer; his wife of 59 years, Sue Comer (2016); and his son, Jeff Comer (2024).
To everyone who knew him, “BB” loved the Lord with all his heart, and that servant faith quietly shaped every part of his life. His quiet strength, gentle spirit, encouraging words, relentless work ethic, devotion to his family, willingness to help others, and endless patience touched many lives and will continue to do so for generations. He also knew exactly when to lighten the moment. He had a quick wit and could tell a joke that made everyone laugh when things became too serious and was a lifelong Ole Miss fan.
To his grandchildren, “Granddaddy” faithfully showed up for sporting events, school programs, church productions, birthdays, weddings, piano recitals, swim meets, band concerts, theater productions, graduations and just about every other milestone imaginable. He didn't just attend those moments—he made sure each grandchild knew they were loved. He passionately shared in their lives, caring about what they cared about.
He attended Bridgewater College, served our country as an Airman in the United States Air Force, before launching an over four-decade career at IBM where he had the privilege of working on the Apollo Space Program. He was a member of Providence Church.
Family will receive friends on Thursday morning, August 6, 2026 from 10-11am at The Harbor (Providence Church) and a Service to celebrate Boyd’s life will immediately follow at 11am. Following the Military Honors, a brief graveside will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park.
