Broadus Houston Raines

Broadus Raines, age 72, died on December 19th, a victim of the Covid 19 virus. He was a resident of the Murdoch Development Center in Butner, NC since 1957 when he was nine years old. At the age of 3 he suffered an extremely high fever which left him severely brain damaged. It was later determined by doctors that he needed to be in a long term care environment. It was a heart wrenching time for the family as he was such a well-loved member.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Bomar L. Raines and Nora Chamblee Raines of Pickens, SC and his brother Luther Henry Raines of Anderson, SC.

Surviving are his sisters: Karen Raines Morgan (Henry) of Raleigh and Margaret Raines Burch of Raleigh, two nieces: Stephanie Burch Irvine of Asheville (David) and Chamblee Burch Simonsen (Lars) of Edenton. two nephews: Bryan Henry Raines (Mary Catherine) of Columbia, SC and Jeffery Michael Raines of Anderson SC. He is also survived by first cousins from the Howard Marion Raines (Margaret) family: Douglas Raines (Karen), Steven Raines (Patti), Keith Raines (Linda), and Chip Raines (Tracie) and from the Mary Ann Raines Carter (Curtis) family: Deborah Ann Brucker (Hank) of Maryville, Kansas. Many relatives of the extended families could also be included.

The family wishes to thank all the wonderful caregivers of the Murdoch Facility. Their meticulous attention to his physical needs was outstanding. In addition, their love and compassion for Broadus was always evident, which was such a heart warming experience for the family to witness. We will be forever grateful. The family is also indebted to Karen and Henry Morgan for the loving devotion they have given and for taking over his guardianship after the passing of his parents.

Burial will be held Monday, Dec. 28th at 11:00 am at Carolina Memorial Gardens,102 Moss Road, in Creedmoor, NC.
