

Burton M. “Burt” Bassett passed away on January 1, 2021 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Burt is the son of the late Hallie Bassett and Evelynne Bassett (Hilton); born in Gettysburg, South Dakota on June 22nd, 1935. For 58 years he was married to Eileen P. Bassett, who preceded him in death. Burt was father of five children: Jay V. Bassett of Atlanta, Todd P. Bassett (predeceased), Christopher Bassett (predeceased), Paul J. Bassett of Raleigh and Andrea K. Joyner of Benson. Burt is also survived by eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Burt graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1953 and attend South Dakota State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation he attended Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned an Ensign in U.S. Navy. While serving he met Eileen, a Naval officer and later were married in Yonkers, New York, in 1960. He served as a Navy LT for four years resigning his commission in 1960.
Burt's career spawned 47 years as a civil engineer. Burt lead projects the engineering and design of the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport. Working overseas for the international airports projects in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Tunisia, and Turkey and was a civilian participant for operation desert storm in Dubai as part of the airport projects. Burt and the family would travel too many locations like Africa, Egypt, India, Europe, China and Indonesia. He loved to travel, take pictures and embrace the different cultures. His family is ever grateful for those opportunities to see other parts of the world.
Burt has been retired since 2006 living in Raleigh NC. He enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing off his bay boat, attending dog herding trails with Eileen and spending time with the kids. He will be missed.
