Cecil R. Baker, Lt. Col. (Ret), 79, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, NC. Born on August 11, 1932 in Pochuta, Mississippi; he was the son of the late John Luther Baker and Annie Cooley Baker.
Cecil retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1980 as the Commander of the 1928th Communications Group at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. During his 30 year career, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Award, the Republic of Vietnam Technical Service Medal, the Bronze Star, and the Republic of Vietnam Air Service Medal, Honor Class. Following retirement, Cecil was the Deputy Personnel Director for the City of Sarasota, FL until 1998.
He is survived by his wife, B. Linda Baker, of Raleigh; children: Cynthia Montgomery, Cecil R. Baker, Jr., John Baker, Barbara Baker and David Baker; step-daughter: Jessica Gordon; grandchildren: Stacey and Brittany; step-grandson: Joshua; siblings, Marie Hornsby, Charles Baker and J.T. Baker; and other family and friends.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue). Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
