

Charles William “Bill” Cooke, 74, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on September 22, 2020 at Rex Hospital in the Heart and Vascular Intensive Care Unit. He was a 1964 graduate of Needham Broughton High School and received a BS from North Carolina State University in 1973. He had a passion for sports and community, working for Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department beginning in college.
In 1973, Bill was appointed as the first Community Center Director at Millbrook Exchange Park working to open the center and establish its use in Raleigh. After directing the center into full establishment, he began working within the maintenance department of Raleigh Parks and Recreation as the Assistant Superintendent of Parks Maintenance. He spearheaded maintenance of tot lots, greenways, building maintenance and machine shops for the department.
He had a love of family, helping others, saltwater fishing, gardening, recreational sports, and house repair. He actively looked for ways to help others, towing a stranded boater or driver, making balloon animals for children during community events, and sharing a joke to bring a laugh and smile to someone’s face. Bill was fondly known as “Mr. Fix It” for his love of small home and appliance repairs and a passion for NC State football having season tickets to football games since graduation. Upon retirement in 2002, he attended and volunteered with Bible Study Fellowship and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Buck Cooke and Annie Pearl Griffin Cooke.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gail; his daughter, Melanie Humphries, and her husband, Dru; his son, Ryan Cooke, and his fiance, Jiselle Watson, and her daughter, Sonya; four grandchildren, Caleb Bunn and Jackson, Rachel and Brock Humphries. He is also survived by two beloved twin sisters, Jean Faye Cooke and Joan Kay Basala and many nieces and nephews including Tania Tully, Athena Nemanich, Christina Georgiou (deceased); Angie Moore and her husband, Kevin; Allison Prescott and her husband, Derick.
A visitation will be held prior to the service on Saturday, September 26, 2020, beginning at 1:30 pm until 2:45 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s St., Raleigh, N.C. Attendees are reminded to practice social distancing and face coverings are required.
A service to celebrate Bill’s life will follow at 3:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. The service will be live streamed through a direct link on Bill's obituary page at www.brownwynneraleigh.com or through the Facebook page of Brown-Wynne Funeral Home & Crematory.
