He served as a Raleigh Police Officer from 1952 to 1964, dedicating over a decade to protecting his community. His career also spanned distinguished roles in the U.S. military, including a position as an Equipment Specialist with the Army, where his expertise supported critical operations. Additionally, he took on the demanding role of a Marine Drill Instructor, shaping recruits with discipline and precision. During his Marine Corps service, he held the rank of Corporal, and later, in the Army, he earned the prestigious rank of Sergeant Major—a testament to his leadership and commitment. During his retirement he enjoyed gunsmithing and working at Hills Sporting Goods part time.
He was a lifetime member of the Sir Walter Gun Club and a member of the NRA.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Elizabeth Spencer; his sister, Jean Holmes; and his beloved wife, Mary Whisnant Schweikert.
He is survived by his daughters, Theresa Taylor (Tony), and Anita Gulley (Patrick); and his grandchildren, Jansen, Jenna, Kylie, Dylan, Ashlyn, Peyton, and Colton.
The family is holding a private service.
