Chase Phillips Boland Haynes was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on July 13, 1936, the daughter of Branson Dewitt “B.D.” Phillips and Emily “Chase” Hall Phillips. She grew up in Raleigh and graduated from Broughton High School in 1954.
In 1955, Chase married William “Bill” Boland, beginning a life shaped by Bill’s career journey and the many places it carried their family. Together they lived in Tampa, Houston, Orcas Island, and Seattle, and their four children — Margaret, Michael, Emily, and Mark — were mainly raised during their years in Houston.
Chase experienced profound loss with the passing of her son Michael in 1983 and her husband Bill in 1991. In 1993, she married Alfred “Milton” Haynes Jr., with whom she lived in Raleigh and Mount Airy. They also kept a home in Todd, North Carolina — a cherished destination for Chase, one she visited as much as possible for its quiet and familiar comfort.
Chase’s interest in zebras began when Michael gave her a zebra painting, and from that point she enjoyed collecting figurines and artwork, painting them, and surrounding herself with zebra-themed items that reflected her personal style.
Chase is survived by her daughter, Margaret Boland; her daughter, Emily Boland and Emily’s children — Hayden, Harrison, Hunter, and Haven Chase; and her son, Mark Boland and his wife Lisa, and their children — Liam, Timothy (Brother Boniface), and Colin.
Chase’s ninety years carried her through many places and many changes. She will be remembered for her independence, her resilience, and the distinct path she followed through each chapter of her life.
