

On Friday, July 22, 2016, Constance "Connie" Willis Steed passed away. She was born in Sanford, NC on August 20, 1924, daughter of Harold Bagby and Constance Kirkman Willis. She attended Women's College now known as UNC-G and then married Lawrence Lamont Steed on January 7, 1944. They lived in Asheboro, NC until they moved to Concord, NC in 1961 and then in July 1963 moved to Raleigh, NC where they have resided for 53 years.
Connie was employed with North Carolina State University for 28 years and retired in August 1990. She was an avid Wolfpack fan and supported the Wolfpack Club for over 50 years!!
Connie was a member of several organizations. She was a member of the N. C. VFW Auxiliary and served as the secretary, North Carolina National Guard Ladies Auxiliary, North Carolina National Guard Officers' Wives Club where she was honored with a lifetime membership, ABWA where she was a charter member of the Carolina Star Chapter, was President twice, Vice President twice, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer, she also organized the Wake County ABWA Exchange and served two years as Chairman, she was chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Spring Conference, and was selected Woman of the Year in 1976. She was also a member of the Raleigh Woman's Club since 1991 and served as its Assistant Treasurer for 4 years and then served as the Treasurer for 5 years and had the 2001-2002 yearbook dedicated to her.
Connie is survived by her husband of 72 years, Lawrence Lamont Steed, her three children Elizabeth Boyles, Raleigh; Lawrence "Monty" Lamont Steed, Jr. and wife Sandra C. Steed, Castle Hayne, NC; and Sandra "Sherri" S. Giles and husband James A. Giles, Banner Elk, NC. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren Anthony George, Jason George, Laurie Steed, Aaron Steed, Trevor Steed, Amber Giles and Jarrad Giles and she is also survived by five great grandchildren Rachel, Carly, James, Lauren and Naomi Giles. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Beck and her brother Billy Willis.
Her funeral service will be on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh. Burial will follow at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens, Raleigh.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at Brown Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Transitions of Raleigh, the Woman's Club of Raleigh or Highland United Methodist Church, Raleigh.
