August 20, 1955 – October 6, 2016
After a long and courageous fight with cancer, there is now another angel in heaven alongside our Lord Christ. During her battle with melanoma, Dana showed immense strength and character, beyond anything of this world. She is survived by her husband David, her son Benjamin, his wife, Alexandra, their daughter, Eve, her sisters Jann Hine and Karen Coalson, 4 nieces; Kelly Duvick, Amy Nelson, Kasey Pearson, and Laura Basham. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Leslie Elmer and Eloise Brown Payne.
Dana grew up in Winston-Salem until attending College at UNC Greensboro; she majored in English. From Greensboro, she moved to Raleigh, where she lived most of her life. She had an impressive career as an Executive Assistant at Barclay’s until retiring at 55. The friends she made at work and church, were ones she cherished unconditionally. “Dee-Dee” thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing and would find every chance to do so, whether at a concert, an event, or in the car. She was a voracious reader and loved taking pictures of family, collecting books and photographs that could fill up a library. Toward the end of her life, Dana traveled back and forth to Norfolk, Virginia extracting the biggest smiles and giggles from one of the joys of her life, her granddaughter, Eve. Her love and devotion to her son and grand-daughter were apparent to all. She was a woman who made sure everything was organized and in its place, traits that made life easier for others. Some remember her as very organized, some as very enthusiastic, and some as a loving mother and grandmother. All of these traits together proved that she always sought the positive in every situation she experienced; her glass was always half full! Her most notable trait was she sought to ensure those around her enjoyed the moments as she did. Dana, Mom, Dee-Dee, will be truly missed. Surely she will be providing small hints of guidance and compassion straight from above until our great Re-Union.
