OBITUARY

David Leighton Marzetti

March 23, 1983October 18, 2010

David Leighton Marzetti, 27, passed away suddenly on October 18, 2010 in Raleigh, NC. He was born on March 23, 1983 in Los Angeles, CA.

David started his high school education at TASIS in Surrey, England and graduated from Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. He attended Northeastern University in Boston, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business. He travelled extensively throughout Europe while living in England and later spent a college semester in Australia. In addition to being a professional drummer, Dave enjoyed surfing, skateboarding, off-roading and working summers at various restaurants in the Outer Banks.

It was through his deep love for music, songwriting and performing live music that he and his best friend James Forgey formed the band “Sleep Control”. A superior musician, Dave was integral in creating the sound and shape of the band. They enjoyed playing numerous venues throughout the Carolinas and Virginia, including the Raleigh Amphitheater and the Lincoln Theater. But, it was his love and compassion for helping others that will live on. Dave was a people person, with a heart of gold who had a way of making everyone feel welcome, comfortable and included. Dave always looked to help the “underdog” and put taking care of others ahead of taking care of himself. He was a rock for others to lean on.

David is lovingly remembered- loving son to his father and mother Al and Barbara Marzetti, dear brother to his twin John and his sister Anne-Marie; loving grandson to Josephine Marzetti of Catonsville, MD; and beloved boyfriend to Mariel Cerna. He will also be missed by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as a large cast of dear friends around the world.

The family will receive friends on Friday October 22, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 23, at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Dave’s memory to the David L. Marzetti Music Trust Fund, which will provide music, lessons and instruments to under privileged youth.

About The Community Music School:

The school provides an opportunity for children from low-income families, ages 6-18, to receive individualized instruction and guidance from area professionals and instructors in most orchestral instruments in addition to piano and guitar. Each half-hour lesson costs the student only one dollar. Whenever possible and when a need exists, the school also provides and repairs instruments for the students to use free of charge for the duration of their enrollment. Music books are also provided when a need exists to encourage practicing and reading during the week. The school endeavors to motivate students and their families to participate in the cultural life of the community through performances, concert attendance, and collaborations with other arts organizations in the area.

I had the pleasure of playing a show with David and Sleep Control a few years ago and will never forget how fluid and talented he was behind that drum kit. In fact, David was the only member I could recall by face after that night. You could cleary see the passion in his eyes as he was playing for himself, his bandmates and the large crowd before him. His contribution to music will never be forgotten.
