David Hurst Stevens, father, businessman, and lifelong golfer and Duke Basketball fan, died peacefully on Monday, July 10th at The Pines Retirement Community in Davidson. He was happy to have lived the past 7 years of his life there and to have made many new friends in his new community.
Born on April 20, 1933 in Conneaut, OH, Dave grew up swimming in Lake Erie, playing golf, and getting into no end of boyhood mischief and adventures, culminating in his spending several summers as a crewman on massive Great Lakes ore freighters. In between adventures, he found time to work on local farms and vegetable canneries, play the trombone, and develop into a talented third baseman.
Dave attended The Hill School and then Duke University, where he encountered two lifelong passions: Duke Basketball and his beloved wife, Ginny (Atkinson) Stevens. Although Duke Basketball would occasionally disappoint and frustrate him, his marriage to Ginny never did and they enjoyed 57 years of wonderful marriage together prior to her death in 2017.
Apart from his family, Dave was most proud of his business career. After completing military service in the US Army, he entered US Steel’s young executive training program, embarking on a career that saw him rise from management trainee through increasingly senior management positions. In 1970, Dave moved to Raleigh, NC when he took over management of Storr Office Supplies, a family business started by Ginny’s maternal grandfather in 1917. Dave took the company to new heights, eventually growing and evolving the company to Storr Office Environment where it drew the attention of leading companies throughout the industry. This resulted in his receiving (as he put it) “an offer I couldn’t refuse,” selling the company and retiring at age 52.
What followed was a rich life of nearly 40 years of family, friends, golf (where he had at least half dozen holes in one and enjoyed his years of friendship and travel with PGA golfer Scott Hoch), and- of course- Duke Basketball. Dave and Ginny moved to Blowing Rock soon after selling the company, where they made many indelible marks on the community over the next 30 years. As their health declined, they moved to Davidson and enjoyed their final years together in the wonderful community at The Pines.
Dave is survived by his daughter Leslie Bulluck (Andy) of Glencoe, IL, and son David Stevens Jr. of Raleigh, his sister Ann Albert of Crystal River, FL, and the true apple of his eye, his granddaughter Lydia Bulluck of Glencoe, IL.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Virginia (“Ginny”), his brother Keith (Steve), and his parents Keith and Jeannette.
A graveside service followed by interment was held at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh on Saturday, July 15th at 10:00 AM.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Pines in Davidson at a future date.
