

Affectionately known as “Debbie”, she was born on October 10, 1954 in Coral Gables, Florida, to James B. and Barbara D. Washington. She graduated from Miami Senior High before furthering her education at North Carolina State University. Debbie built a distinguished career in the insurance industry, having held a variety of positions. Her dedication, hard work, and leadership left a lasting impact on her colleagues and the many clients she served. Also as a military spouse, she patiently maintained her family, household, and career during her husband’s absences.
Her decisive and self-assured demeanor was tempered by a loving nature that was evident in her commitment to her family, friends, and co-workers. Also, her faith was a cornerstone of her life and she was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church. She had varied interests from sky diving and jet skiing to gardening, solving crossword puzzles, and bird watching. Debbie also graced many with her culinary talents. Keeping company with her granddaughter and traveling during her retirement years also brought her great joy and satisfaction.
Debbie is survived by her daughter, Catherine “Tina” (Harris) Giannaris, her granddaughter Elena Giannaris, her sisters Terrie Washington and Beverly (Greg) Carroll, and grand pup “Bella”. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother James “Jimmy” Washington, and her beloved husband, Kenneth Starnes, Sgt. Major, US Army Ret.
A viewing and Trisagion Service will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, July 13, 2024 from 10 to 11am with the Trisagion prayer beginning at 11am, followed by the funeral service. Debbie will be interred at Raleigh Memorial Park at the Chapel Mausoleum. A private Makaria will follow.
