Dominick was born in Brooklyn, NY to Andrew and Domenica, on December 3, 1927. He grew up in Bethpage, NY prior to moving to Massapequa, NY where he raised his family.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Angelina Maniscalco Gagliardo; sons, Michael and Paul (Yvonne); daughters, Sandy Durso, Regina Printz (Jack), and Cindy Ross (Erik); and his beloved grandchildren, Andrew, Emelie, Kevin, Anna, Jessi, Gabriela, Matthew, Greg, Angel and Dani.
Dominick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after high school, where he proudly served our country, during World War II, in Italy, Tunisia, & Libya. He earned a degree in Engineering at SUNY Farmingdale and started his own architectural drafting firm, specializing in residential, commercial and church projects for over 50 years. Dominick attended NYU in the evenings to earn his teaching credentials. Fondly known as “Mr. G”, Dominick was a teacher in the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) Program, on Long Island, where he designed and wrote the state-wide curriculum for the architectural drafting program. Dominick was active in the local community, his church, and served on the school board for 12 years.
He was always there to lend a helping hand to his neighbors and family, especially when it came to a construction project. He fulfilled one of his dreams in 1989 when he designed and built his own home on the canal (Narrasketuck Creek) and had his boat docked in the backyard. Dominick was an avid boater and fisherman on Long Island’s Great South Bay. He travelled on his boat, “Come Away”, with his family going as far north as Lake Champlain and south, through the intracoastal waterways to Annapolis, MD. Boating with Dominick was always an adventure! Upon retirement, Dominick moved to Kent Island, on Maryland’s eastern shore, where he continued his passion for boating on the Chesapeake Bay. There he was Commodore of the Castle Harbor Marina Yacht Club. In 2010, he settled in Raleigh, NC.
Dominick loved spending time with his grandchildren; building things, working on cars, boating and sharing his love of travel. Among his hobbies were his love for football, playing in high school, college, and semi-pro; cheering on the Green Bay Packers, playing cards: Solitaire and Hand & Foot, and reading.
Dominick will be remembered for his bright, loving smile, his generous heart and his kind, soft-spoken manner. Family and friends are invited to join us for Dominick’s memorial mass on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at 3pm at St. Francis of Assisi Church, in the St. Mary of the Angel’s Chapel 1401 Leesville Road
