Don L. Carney, 82 of Raleigh, died Sunday evening, November 17, 2013.The family will hold a private graveside ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
Born in Logan, Iowa, Don was the son of the late Lee Carney and Frances Hardy Carney. He served in the United States Navy from 1951-1955 as a radio operator aboard the destroyer, USS Shields. Don graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in accounting.
Don spent 32 years as a Field Office Manager with Massman Construction of Kansas City,Mo, retiring to Raleigh in 1996. His career allowed him to travel coast to coast building some of the largest bridges, dams, and piers in the US.
Don married the love of his life in 1979, Doris Cramer Carney, with whom he shared 21 happy years of marriage until her passing in 2000.
Don is survived by his daughter, Connie Willoughby and husband Tom of Woodbridge,VA, and their two children, Cassandra and Cory; his son, Barry Carney and wife Susan of Nokesville,VA, and their son Benjamin; his son, Stephen Cramer and wife Carla, of Hanna City, IL, and their daughter, Shannon. His daughter, Heidi O’Connor of Raleigh and her sons, Daniel and Sean;his son, John Cramer and wife Jill of Raleigh and their sons,Samuel and Noah; his son, Jim Cramer and wife, Lisa of Rock Hill, SC and their daughters, Emily and Hannah.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and two grandsons, Matthew Millikin and Brian O’Connor.
Don will be remembered for his gentle and quiet nature, his love of reading books, watching old western movies, and enjoying a cold Miller beer when he got the chance. Most of all, Don will be remembered for his long and endearing love for his wife Doris and the happiness they brought each other in the second half of their lives.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Brighton Gardens for their patient and thoughtful care for Don over the last 6 years.
