Don was born in Dunn, NC on September 26, 1954 to Alenzo and Edna Hawley. He graduated from Dunn High School in 1972, following many years as an athlete where he made lifelong friends. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1976 with a degree in Business. While at North Carolina State University, he played lacrosse and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Don was married to Wilma Ellis on June 9, 1979. They were married exactly 45 years on the day he passed away.
Don worked as a CPA in corporate America for many years before fulfilling his dream of opening his own accounting firm. Many of his clients became dear friends. A lifelong Presbyterian, Don had a deep and abiding faith and was active in his church as a Deacon prior to the decline of his health due to cancer. He enjoyed spending time with his family, action movies, rom coms, the beach, and animals of all kinds. He was often found walking a family dog or feeding the geese and deer in the yard. Following his parents into Masonic service, he became a 32nd degree Mason. Don always had a big smile, a big laugh, a big heart, and a joke to share.
Don is survived by his wife Wilma, daughter Nina, of Raleigh, niece Alicia Rich with her husband Eric and daughter Evelyn “Eva” of Arlington, VA., uncles William Basil Hawley of Coats, NC and Raymond Jernigan of Raleigh, sister-in-law Nina Reynolds of Winston-Salem, and many cousins and nephews by marriage.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Alenzo and Edna, his brother, Charles, and his sister, Lynn Johnson.
His service of witness to the resurrection was held at First Presbyterian church on 112 S. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC on June 14, 2024. Interment followed at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue.
The family of Donald Stuart Hawley wishes to thank the many oncologists and nurses who helped him during his 23 year battle with cancer until God said, "Enough. Don, come with me."
