

Mr. Spencer was born April 28, 1933 in High Point to James Ross Spencer, Sr. and Nonnie Susan Morris Spencer. He graduated from High Point College. Upon graduation he proudly served in the US Army, stationed in Germany. After serving his Country he returned to Raleigh where he worked as a Revenue Tax Administrator in the Sales & Use Tax Division with the NC Department of Revenue for forty years until his Retirement in 1995. His three greatest loves were his family, his country and vacationing in Myrtle Beach. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, a trade he learned from his father.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carolyn Shoaf Spencer, brother, Ross Spencer, Jr. and sisters, Irene Spencer Joines, Eutha Spencer Hix and Marie Spencer Reddeck.
He is survived by two sons: Donald D. “Del” Spencer, Jr. and wife Karla, of Raleigh and James C. “Jim” Spencer and wife Jean, of Garner; grandsons: Wesley Spencer, Andrew Spencer and Bryan Jones; great-grandchild: Ori Jones; and by many other family and friends.
A Graveside service was held on January 11, 2023 at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Mr. Spencer will always be remembered for his outgoing personality and his love of sports.
The family would like to thank the Staff of Transitions LifeCare for the care and compassion they showed Don “Pepaw” in his final days.
