He is survived by his two sons, Bryce Burkey and his wife Amanda of High Point, NC, and Blake Burkey and his wife Nicole of Winston-Salem, NC. Doug and Jane are proud grandparents to Ella Grace, Harrison, and Theodore of Bryce and Amanda, and to Alice Burkey of Blake and Nicole.
Doug is also survived by his daughters Amanda (Burkey) Windley of Jacksonville, FL, and Kerry Ann (Burkey) Roberts of Houston, TX. Their children include Aaron and Avery, Amanda’s children, and Jackson, Kerry Ann’s son.

Most notable of his many passions was his love of fly fishing, which he pursued every chance he had throughout the states of West Virginia, Michigan, and North Carolina. Doug spent hours tying his own flies and passed down his love of trout fishing to his sons, Bryce and Blake. Many cherished memories were made together on the banks of countless streams.
Doug was also a skilled carpenter and remodeler in his spare time and made numerous improvements to the family home of 35 years.
As an alumnus of West Virginia University, Doug was an avid fan of WVU athletics, especially his beloved WVU Mountaineers football team. Doug and Jane raised Bryce and Blake with this love of WVU and attended many football games at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, WV and bowl games throughout the Southeast.
Throughout his lifetime, Doug volunteered countless hours of his time to causes important to him. One of his most meaningful commitments was the many years he spent with West Virginia Special Olympics, helping plan events and assisting athletes during their competitions.
Doug was also especially proud of the 20 years he spent doing statistics for the Cardinal Gibbons High School football team in Raleigh, NC, attending home and away games every Friday night. He began volunteering to assist the team when both of his sons, Bryce and Blake, played for the team.
Doug shared his love of sports with his sons by coaching many of their teams as they grew up, including 12 years coaching their baseball teams in the Raleigh Parks and Recreation league.
Some of Doug’s early life accomplishments included becoming an Eagle Scout, serving as student body president during his senior year of high school, and spending a semester abroad in Germany during his junior year of high school as a foreign exchange student.
Doug’s professional career included 28 years with BorgWarner Chemicals / GE Plastics Division. He concluded his career with 15 years at Duke University, where he served as Business Manager for the Office of Student Affairs.
