
Dr. Francis Edward Winslow, Jr. died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 11, 2011. He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on November 2, 1924, the youngest child and only son of Nemmie G. Paris Winslow and Francis Edward Winslow. Frank’s father was a founding member of the law firm Battle, Winslow, Scott, and Wiley now celebrating their centennial year. Frank achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He was then drafted into the Navy’s V-12 Unit. He attended Bates College, lettered in crew and graduated from Harvard in 1946 Cum Laude. His service to the Navy included a tour on a minesweeper in Charleston, SC and on the USS North Carolina. He served as an Ensign and in the Naval Reserve as Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Medical Corp.
In 1947 Frank began his education in pre-law and pre-medicine at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was a member of the DKE fraternity and he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He chose Duke University Medical School and graduated a member of AOA, the medical honor society. He completed his pediatric training at the University of Maryland Hospital. He began private practice in Columbia, South Carolina, moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia before finally moving to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1961. His practice is now known as Blue Ridge Pediatrics. During his years of practice, he served as Chief of Pediatrics at both Rex Hospital and Wake Med. His professional affiliations include: The Raleigh Academy of Medicine, The Wake Medical Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the North Carolina Medical Society.
Frank served on the board of Rex Hospital and was a founding board member for the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities. He devoted his time and talents there for many years. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and since 1961, St. Michaels Episcopal Church.
Francis Edward Winslow, Jr. was predeceased by his parents, his wife Cecelia Covington Dicks Winslow, his twin sister Margaret W. Wiley, and his sister Adelaide W. Crawley. Frank is survived by his daughter Cecelia Covington Winslow, his son Francis Edward Winslow III and wife Karin S. Winslow, grandchildren Francis Edward Winslow IV, Karin Alexis Winslow, his sister Mary Wood Winslow Bobbitt, and many nieces and nephews. He loved his family, medicine, and his dog.
The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, January 15, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at their home. A Funeral Service in celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, January 18, at 2:00 PM at St. Michaels Episcopal Church on Canterbury Road.
