Edith grew up and attended public schools in Nash County, and graduated from Spring Hope High School in 1938. Her mother encouraged her to go into nursing so she graduated from a three-year nursing program at Rocky Mount Sanitorium, then did post-graduate work in obstetrics in New Jersey. Following that, she attended Louisburg College and received an associate of arts degree in 1949. In 1951 she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Duke University. She married Dr. Millard Hill of Raleigh in 1958. They adopted a baby girl and then a baby boy. Unfortunately, Dr. Hill died when the children were quite young. She later married William Toussaint and they were married for a brief period before he died.
Edith was a lifelong American Red Cross volunteer. The Triangle Area Chapter honored her by presenting her with the Governor's Award in Health and Safety for her teaching Red Cross courses such as Mother and Baby Care, CPR and First Aid as well as for her volunteering at Red Cross First Aid Stations.
Some of the happiest times of Edith’s life were spent as the camp nurse at The Vineyard Camp in Westfield, NC. For 18 consecutive summers, Edith, who was known as Bunny, provided first aid with hugs and kisses.
A devoted and active church member throughout her life, she joined White Oak Methodist Church (Nash County) as a child.
