Edwin S. Berngartt

Edwin S. Berngartt of Raleigh, NC, died on Dec. 21, 2011, at his home in the Magnolia Glen retirement community, just shy of his 94th birthday. He was born on Jan. 9, 1918, in Baltimore, MD, son of the late Maurice and Sadye Berngartt.

Ed graduated at age 19 from Johns Hopkins University in 1937 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a Major in the U.S. Corps of Engineers from 1941-1946. Ed married his beloved Margaret Holmes in 1942, after which they enjoyed 62 years of a beautiful marriage until Margaret passed away in 2004.

Ed was Chairman of the Board and CEO of Poole and Kent Corp., Wash., DC. In 1979, he rose to the pinnacle of his industry by being chosen President of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America. After retiring in 1983, Ed and Margaret moved from MD to Hilton Head, SC, in 1986. Ed served as a volunteer at the Hilton Head Medical Center for fourteen years, before moving to Raleigh, NC, in 2005. Ed continued six more years of volunteering at Rex Hospital in Raleigh until the age of 93.

Ed was a kind husband and father, and had a great sense of humor. He maintained an optimistic attitude, even until the last days of his life. He loved his family, mathematics, corny jokes, keeping up with the news, computers (ever since their invention), and prided himself on knowing the EXACT time always.

Ed is survived by his brother, Mel Berngartt (and wife Peggy) of Burlington, NC, and two sons, Bob Berngartt (and wife Carolyn) of Silver Spring, MD, and John Berngartt (and wife Beth) of Raleigh, NC, his four grandchildren, Scott (and wife Alena), Brett, Claire, and David Berngartt (and wife Liza), and his two great grandchildren (of Scott and Alena), Owen and Alex Berngartt.
