

After graduating from Lees-McRae College and Elon College he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon release from active duty he was employed by the City of Reidsville as Assistant Recreation Director. In 1957, he was employed by the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles where he served intermittently until 1981. The last four years with the State he served as Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Upon retirement from state government he was President of the North Carolina Trucking Association for twenty years. “Eb” was President of the North Carolina State Employees Association in 1962, a board member of the State Employees Credit Union and an advisory member of the NC Highway Safety Research Center. His recognitions and awards include the Eagle Scout Award, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the Dan K. Moore Highway Safety Award and the News & Observer Tar Heel of the Week.
Eb was a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, the Raleigh Civitan Club, the Raleigh Sports Club and the Good Ole’ Boys Club. Many fun years were spent with family and friends at their home in Pine Knoll Shores, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Katherine Beatty Peters; his three daughters, Kathy Peters of Morganton, NC, Suzanne and her husband Brian Pecheles of Greenville, NC and Betsy Peters of Holly Springs, NC; 3 grandchildren, J. Brian Pecheles, Katherine Peters and Andrew Peters; a brother-in-law, Joe Beatty and his wife Jane of Greensboro, NC; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 16 at 11 a.m. A private interment will be held prior to the memorial service. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
