I worked with Elise, at Brighton Gardens, and just loved her.  She would always take me in her room to show me all of her paintings and tell me stories of her youth.  She was an amazing lady and one that made a life long impression on me.  She will be missed.

Ms. Elise shared many stories and memories and I just enjoyed her company. I admired her passion for painting and Elvis. What a pleasant dear person that I will always remember for her caring and sharing. We have loss, but heaven has gained an Angel.

My great aunt was spoken of many times by my father throughout my adult life as an artistic inspiration and influence on his life. My condolences to John and all her closest friends and family who will miss her greatly. Her life will shine on through eternity with her art and words.

Elise was always great fun. She made anyone feel special! My friend, Stephenie, and I saw her in the drugstore ('96) and Stephenie was charmed immediately. Elise was interesting and interested in all of life. Mary Lou and Jule Shanklin

Elise was my neighbor for over 16 years and a dear friend for a longer period.  What a beautiful and long life she had! She had many friends, many hobbies, and many talents. Above all,  she was a truly nice person and enjoyed life to the fullest. What a great example you have been to us, Elise. Good bye, and have a couple of Bloody Marys with your numerous old friends who have been waiting for you up there!    Mourad  Aissa.

We wish to send our deepest condolences to the family members of Elise Peurifoy Speights. Over many years we had the honor to be friends and neighbors and were very impressed with the talents displayed and the help she gave to her son, John, to develop his skills in the games of chess and bridge.

My Aunt Elise was a joy! Her cheery voice on the phone (all I had for the last several years) will be missed. Over the years she regaled us with stories of her life as a musician, an artist, a mother, a cat lover, a party-giver and employee at the Dept. of Transportation. But I knew her best at holidays in Walterboro where we would all join in the living room and around the dining room table for fellowship and feast. To commemorate her passing I will do one of the things she loved best...have a glass of wine! And watch Jeopardy.

I remember being moved to tears when she showed me two of her paintings depicting events of 9/11. Living in New York, so close to the city, they struck a sorrowful chord in me.

I will be thinking of John, her son, and hope he is cared for in time of grief. I will be thinking of and thankful for Donna and Marshall for doing what needed to be done in the last days.

I will be thinking of my sister Virginia and her friend Vicki who will make the trip to Walterboro for the burial. 

My children, James Johnson Speights and Michelle Kathleen Speights, now 44 and 46, remember their great-Aunt Elise fondly. I wish their children could have known her. We'll just have to tell them some of her stories, and pass along the history.
