She was born September 30, 1930, the youngest child of the late Roy Marshall Chipley and Agatha Knox Chipley. She was preceded in death by her sister, Agatha Chipley Hughes, brother, Roy Marshall Chipley, Jr., her niece, Nan Chipley Jenkins, and nephew, Thomas Parke Hughes, Jr. She is survived by her loving daughters, Eliza Knox Barker (Dan) of Greensboro, NC and Katharine Douglass Hesmer (Ron) of Wilmington, NC; and her adored grandchildren, Dan Taylor Barker III of Steamboat Springs, CO, Emilie Knox Barker of Durham, NC, Mary Katharine Barker of New York, NY, Austen Whitney Hesmer (Will Ziada) of Melbourne, Australia, Greta Smedes Hesmer of Carrboro, NC, and Theodore Casper Hesmer III of Wilmington, NC; and five nieces and nephews.
Eliza graduated from Saint Mary’s School (‘48HS, ‘50C) and the University of Georgia (’52) with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught Kindergarten and 3rd grade students at Ravenscroft School (Tucker Street) before devoting her abundant creativity and thoughtful, loving attention to raising her family. She was a member of the Junior League of Raleigh, the Colonial Dames of North Carolina and a lifelong member of The Church of the Good Shepherd.
Her daughters wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to their mom’s devoted companions and caregivers for their dedication and support when it mattered most to our family: Debbie Ezzell, Regina Booker, Lindsay Emmerson, Sharon Jones, Erin Ross, Nessie Prince, and Ann Judd. Your many kindnesses touched our hearts and made possible Mom’s wish to continue to enjoy the comforts of her home.
A private graveside memorial service is planned.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor the life of our mom are encouraged to remember the needs of those less fortunate through any expression of kindness or with a donation to Meals on Wheels of Wake County (wakemow.org) or to The Church of the Good Shepherd (cgs-Raleigh.org).
