

Elmo L. Griffin, 90, of Raleigh, N.C. died March 5, 2012 at The Oaks at Mayview. He was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was active in Training Union and served as a teacher in Sunday School.
He was born on July 14, 1921 in Wilson County, N.C. After graduating from Edgecomb County High School, he joined the army and became an officer in the Signal Corps of the United States Army, serving in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II. He was in the reserve for 20 years after the war, and retired with the rank of Captain. After the war he was employed by Southern Bell Telephone Company for 38 years, retiring in 1983.
Survivors include his son, Larry Griffin, daughter-in-law, Catherine Griffin, three granddaughters, Julie, Mary and Jennifer Griffin and multiple nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Elizabeth (Lib) Pate Griffin; parents, Benjamin and Mattie Brake Griffin; sisters, Annie Mae Proctor, Irene G. Owens, Ruth G. Edwards, Thelma G. Rose; and brothers Johnny Griffin and Joe Griffin.
A service to celebrate the life of Elmo will be held at 2:00pm at Forest Hills Baptist Church on Thursday, March 8, 2012. The family will receive visitors and family in the church parlor at 1:00pm prior to the funeral at the church. Graveside services will follow funeral at Brier Creek Memorial Park.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff and caregivers at The Oaks at Mayview for the loving care provided to Elmo during his eight year residency there.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Forest Hills Baptist Church.
