

Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community in Raleigh where she was a resident for 23
years.
Mrs. Woodard was born in Greensboro to the late Herbert Edmund and Ollie Hartness
Otwell on July 7, 1918. After graduating from Bessemer High School in 1935 she attended
Greensboro College. She continued her education at St. Leo’s Hospital School of Nursing where
she graduated in 1940. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she
received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Mrs. Woodard was employed with the Guilford
County Department of Health where she was Clinic Supervisor. During her 29 years of
employment the North Carolina Public Health Association awarded her the Service Award for
23 years of public health service in North Carolina. She was also awarded Supervisor of the Year
by the Guilford County Health Department as well as the Meritorious Service Award and the
Departmental Citation for Outstanding Service. Mrs. Woodard was the President and Vice
President of the Pilot Club International of Greensboro. She was a long time member of First
Presbyterian Church in Greensboro before moving to Raleigh where she was a member of
White Memorial Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 37 years, William Edgerton Woodard. Surviving are one brother, Herbert Charles Otwell of Julian; one niece, Debbie Otwell Elmore and husband, Stephen of Pfafftown; three great nephews, Nathan Elmore and wife, Mary of Shelby, Aaron Elmore and wife, Sarah of Littleton, CO and Lee Elmore of Nashville, TN; one step-niece Linda Wade of Julian and two step-great nieces, Lori Wade Sellman and husband, David of Raleigh and Sheri Wade Myrick and husband, Michael of Climax.
The Graveside Service will be held at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery 6000 High Point Rd., Greensboro, NC 27407, at 11:00 am, Friday, October 29, 2010. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the Memorial Service in the Second Floor Dining Room of Stewart Health Center at Springmoor Retirement Community, 1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615 at 3:00pm, Friday, October 29, 2010 with Rev. Phyllis Mayo, Chaplain of Springmoor, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to The Springmoor Endowment Fund, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615 or to Alzheimer’s of North Carolina, Inc, 1305 Navaho Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27609.
