Eugene M. Langley, Jr. died Monday, January 11, 2016 at his home in Raleigh.
A native of Albemarle – and the son of Nina and Eugene M. Langley, Sr. he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during his youth. He graduated from Albemarle High School class of 1957. He attended NC State University and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Gene was a loyal Wolfpacker who was a generous supplier of tickets to his family, nurturing their love of the Wolfpack as well. His passion extended beyond athletics; he served as President of the NCSU Alumni Association, Chairman of the NC State Foundation, and as a Board Member of the NC State Investment Fund. In addition to his loyalty to NC State, he served Meredith College in many roles including service as a member of the Board of Trustees and two years as Chairman of the Board. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Raleigh YMCA, the Rex Hospital Foundation, Camp Oak Hill, and Prevent Blindness of NC.
In recognition of his involvement with these organizations he received many awards during his lifetime. He was named Trustee Emeritus of Meredith College in 2015. He was the 2014 Recipient of the Jerry and Elizabeth Godwin Red Torch Award from the NC State Foundation and received the 2005 Meritorious Service Award from the NC State Alumni Association.
He had a financial advisory practice for 40 years until 2013 when health issues forced him to retire. He took great pleasure in guiding clients with his kind wit and gentle lessons to set them on the path towards financial independence.
Gene was a member of the Stag Club, Carolina Country Club, the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point, the Joe Hayes Club, and a member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church where he was a charter member of the Danielson Class.
Gene was an avid golfer, PIKA brother, and member of the Raleigh community. Gene always saw the good side of life, and in response to any question as to his well-being, he would answer with his trademark expression of heartfelt humility – “I’m doing better than I’m entitled to”. His humble spirit and passion for his work is summed up in a phrase we heard often: “I’m just a little ole boy from Stanly County who got lucky enough to have the opportunity to have a meaningful and lasting impact on the people I care about through the work I do”
