Eva Hackney Hargrave (Eve) Smith

Eva Hackney Hargrave Smith (Eve), 90, died Wednesday, September 16, 2026. She was born in Lexington, North Carolina, on December 12, 1935, the daughter of Eva Hassell Hackney Hargrave and Charles Hamilton Hargrave.

Eve graduated from Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh and received a B.A. degree in art history from Duke University. During her college years she met Sherwood Hubbard Smith, Jr., a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, and they were married on July 20, 1957, in Lexington, NC. They first lived in Chapel Hill while Sherwood attended law school at UNC. In 1960 they moved to Charlotte, NC and then, in 1962, they relocated to Raleigh, where they lived the rest of their lives.

Eve was a lifelong Episcopalian and an active and devoted member of Christ Church in Raleigh. Her years at Saint Mary’s School and the friendships made there were very special to her. She supported Saint Mary’s in many capacities, including service on its Board of Trustees, and a scholarship there was established in her honor.

Eve served the Raleigh and many other North Carolina communities in a variety of ways. She was a founding director of the Carolina Ballet, president of the Museum of History Associates and a member of the Tryon Palace Commission. She also served on the advisory boards of the Humanities Council, the North Carolina Arts Council, the Historic Bath Commission, the Foundation of Hope, and the American Dance Festival. She was a member of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society, the Junior League of Raleigh and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in North Carolina.

Above all, Eve placed high value on family, friendship and gratitude for the blessings she had received.

Eve is survived by her husband, Sherwood, with whom she shared and treasured 69 years of marriage. Also surviving are their three daughters, Marlin Dohlman, Cameron Callaway (Hadley) and Evie Davis (Matt); seven grandchildren, Darden Callaway Cave (Elliot), Sherwood Callaway, Hadley Callaway, Sigrid Dohlman, James Dohlman, Eva Davis and Amanda Davis; and two great-grandchildren, Penn Cave and Eve Cave. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Elizabeth George Hargrave (Bett), and treasured nieces and cousins.

Eve was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Charles Hamilton Hargrave, Jr. (Hammy) and Charles Clement Hargrave II (Bud), and her son-in-law, Peter Anders Dohlman.

A private family burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. It will be followed by a memorial service at Christ Church, 120 East Edenton Street, Raleigh, on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the Commons at Christ Church, where the family will receive friends.
