

Evelyn Bagby Montgomery died peacefully on December 24, 2012. She was born on February 26, 1917 in Richmond, Virginia, the daughter of Thomas Jackson Bagby and Susan Evelyn Thornton. She was married for 43 years to the late Harry Howard Montgomery Sr., who preceded her in death in 1988. She lived a full life filled with faith, friends, and family.
Surviving are daughter Becky M. Harris of Charlotte, son Harry H. Montgomery, Jr. and wife, Ann of Raleigh, grandchildren Scott Thornton Harris and James Montgomery Harris of Charlotte, Michael Harry Montgomery of Wilmington and Katherine Montgomery White and husband John of Winston-Salem. Evelyn is also survived by great grandchildren Karson, Lily, Meredith, Charlotte and Eleanor.
In addition to her parents and husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Jackson Bagby, Jr. and his wife Doris, and by her sister Edythe Bagby Watson and her husband Richard.
Evelyn graduated from Broughton High School in 1934, made her debut at the North Carolina Terpsichorean Ball, attended St. Mary’s College for one year, and finished school at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. before returning home to Raleigh. In her early years she worked at NC State College, for the Work Projects Administration, and at Occidental Life Insurance Co. before becoming a fulltime wife and mother.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church on Friday, December 29th at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends after the service in the Jane Bell Gathering Space at White Memorial. A private burial will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park.
