Frances Freeman McLean, age 93, of Raleigh passed away October 10, 2013. She was born May 30, 1920 in Webster County, GA., to Henry Cuthbert and May Dickey Freeman. She was a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh and a former member of Chestnut Street United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church of Lumberton, NC.
Mrs. McLean graduated from Unadilla High School in 1937 and in 1941 from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA., where she served for a time as Baptist Student Union secretary and recreational director for service men, Naval Corps and Signal Corps. After a year of teaching in Mt. Vernon, GA., Mrs. McLean moved to Lumberton, NC to become Director of Religious Education at First Baptist Church. She later taught in Robeson County Schools at Littlefield High School and Lumberton Jr. High School until her retirement in 1982.
In 1947, after WW II, she met and married James McKinnon McLean of Lumberton who preceded her in death after nearly 58 years of marriage.
Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. McLean was preceded in death by her sisters Blanche Freeman Avery of Pine Mountain, GA., Irene Freeman Daniels of Warner Robins, GA., and her brother-in-law, Gerald Daniels of Warner Robins, GA.
Mrs. McLean is survived by her daughters, Dickey McLean Adams and husband, Franklin of Raleigh, Catherine McLean Walden and husband, Archie of Garner, NC; brother-in-law, Curtis Avery of Pine Mountain, GA, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins in GA. and NC.
A celebration of Mrs. McLean's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 15 at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh with Rev. Rick Clayton officiating. Interment and graveside service will follow at 4:00 PM at Oak Grove Cemetery in Maxton, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hayes Barton UMC, PO Box 6088, Raleigh, NC 27618-6088, Chestnut Street UMC Building Fund, 200 E. 8th St., Lumberton, NC 28359, or Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607. The family will receive friends after the service at HBUMC and the graveside service in Maxton.
